Scorpions in Croatia: They’re Real and We Had One in Our Home!

Desert Hairy Scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis).

Last year, we visited Croatia – Pula, Rijeka and Zagreb – and absolutely loved it (impressions coming soon!), but we also had a completely WTF moment when we met a little bug we were clearly not expecting to find in Croatia. Yes, as the title subtly suggests, we did meet a scorpion while in Croatia and it wasn’t funny at all! On the contrary!

So how did this happen? We had just gotten to Croatia and we were enjoying our amazing AirBnb rental in Pula, when I decided to move the couch closer to the bed in order to prevent our little baby (he was just two years old at the time of our visit) from falling off the bed. We were extremely lucky that I decided to do that because under the couch, there was this little resident…

“It’s a scorpion,” I joked when my wife asked me what’s that strange bug – I had only seen scorpions before in cartoons and movies (OK, maybe museums too), but I was sure there can’t be a scorpion in our rental in Croatia.

But then I looked closer and there he was – a real scorpion, maybe a bit larger than a regular cockroach, but a scorpion nevertheless. You can check out the beast below, after being put out of its misery by my boot:

It was small – maybe 2 centimeters, but looked mean!

Pardon the blurry photo – I was still scared

You can still see the needle on its tail – that surely looks painful!

Apparently, scorpions in Croatia are not as uncommon as you might think. Who would’ve thought?

Are scorpions in Croatia dangerous?

According to the nice lady that was our host and some extra research I did afterwards, scorpions in Croatia are not dangerous. I mean, they are not lethal, but if you are unlucky enough to get stung by one, it will be very painful. But it’s good to know – I certainly didn’t know that when we found it and I had a horrible night where I couldn’t sleep at all, afraid that armies of scorpions will crawl under the door into my bed looking for revenge for their fallen comrade.

It didn’t happen though and that was the only scorpion we’ve seen in Croatia. We were staying in this beautiful house that had an amazingly beautiful garden with lots of plants – apparently that’s heaven for the scorpions who like both vegetation and humidity. We were just unlucky to have one enter the room, but fortunate enough to find it before it went completely mad. Even though it doesn’t kill you, a scorpion bite is not something you want to have as a memory anywhere in the world!

But at least you know what to expect – and if you’re not staying at the upper floors, maybe check out under the bed for scorpions. Better be safe than sorry!
